Anxiety

Living with anxiety and panic attacks is difficult and can be a very lonely place.

An individual may crave healthy connection but the fear that is so intense can stop a person from experiencing healthy connection and a healthy life.

The symptoms of anxiety at times, emotionally and physically are extremely painful.

At Sharon Talk Therapy, I will help you understand what anxiety is and what happens to your body.

I will be able to help with techniques that can help manage your anxiety attacks.

Together we can explore the origin of these fears and how you can change your experience in life to not live in an unhealthy emotional fearful environment all the time.

Bereavement

Dealing with bereavement is a very individual process. Talking to a professional while you are going through the grieving of a loved one is extremely beneficial. You can cry and express your feeling without worrying about upsetting family and friends, and you can be totally honest about how you are feeling and what you are thinking about the process.

Sometimes you can have complex bereavement or what is also known as complicated grief. This can arise when the relationship to the person you have lost has been estranged.  Or you may have had a codependent relationship with the person that has passed. Complicated grief is a prolonged, intense emotional pain which impacts profoundly on you being able to function and re-engage with life.

If you are having trouble accepting the death of someone that is no longer in your life, then please contact me and I will be there on your emotional journey to try and come to terms with your difficult loss.

Depression

Depression is not always obvious to people on the outside. For some individuals who suffer with depression, there is still shame around being depressed. It can be difficult to admit to someone that you are not coping as well on the inside as you may seem on the outside. Some of you may talk negative to yourself saying you are weak etc. But this is not true. Many people at some point in their life, even if life is good, can experience depression. The best thing you can do, is to admit aloud to someone that you are struggling. At Sharon Talk Therapy, I will accept you unconditionally and will truly understand your feelings, so admitting to a professional like myself is a safe place for you to start. We can explore together what is happening and how things can change, so that you can start coping with life better and start enjoying life.

Maybe you are a person that is open about being depressed and despite this and support from family and friends, you still struggle. Talking with a professional will help identify the origin and how it has contributed to your depressive state. And learn some tools to cope better.

Trauma

Suffering with trauma in your life, can have a devastating and complex effect on your coping skills, your interpersonal relationships, your self-esteem and self-identity. This too can lead to addiction, self-sabotage, trust issues, self-hatred and much more complex issues, like eating disorders, suicidal ideation, toxic relationships and much more.

At Sharon Talk Therapy, I help you with trained techniques to help you to speak about your trauma and the effects of it and how you can change from being disempowered to becoming a person who lives from a place of empowerment, with less anger, resentment and destructive thoughts and behaviours and develop your true authentic self-identity.

Shame and Guilt

If you have shame and guilt, it deprives you of happiness and then you can have a life of self-destruction, self-sabotage, possible suicidal-ideation, self-harming behaviours and maybe substance or behavioural addiction amongst other maladaptive behaviours. Then those behaviours perpetuate more shame and guilt.

Talking with a professional can help you change living from a place of shame to a place of self acceptance; and working through the process of guilt, so you can get to a place of self-forgiveness is a positive life-changing experience for you and for people around you.

              Eating Disorders

There are a few different types of eating disorders and they can be fatal if untreated. It can be eating too little or eating excessively or binge eating and purging. Emotional dysregulation is a big part of the struggle. The sooner a person gets help, the better. There is a lot more to the suffering than the food; it is very much about emotions, perception, acceptance, coping, trauma, distorted thoughts and more. If you are a person who is using food as a way to control your life, when things have been chaotic and out of your control, then I hope you have the courage to reach out and talk. Talking really does help, when you can truly be honest in the sessions, so you can be honest with yourself as to what you are really going through. You don’t have to have a facade and pretend you are ok when you are not. I will listen without judgement. Anyone who suffers with an eating disorder is living with extreme distress. I would be available for anyone suffering with an eating disorder or for a partner or family member or friend that feel helpless seeing their loved ones suffer. Having this illness affects a persons’ physical well-being and their mental health significantly and affects people who see them suffer.

              Addiction

Addiction can be a substance like alcohol, chocolate, food, street drugs or prescription drugs. It can also be a behavioural addiction like gambling, shopping, phone, drama & chaos, sex, porn, gaming, internet, a person (codependency). A substance addiction with alcohol or street drugs maybe easier for people around the person in addiction to see but it is not always obvious to the person in addiction at first, until the consequences get more serious. Prescription drugs can be kept secret for a bit longer, just like chocolate, food, and gambling.

A lot of people don’t realise there is such a thing as food addiction, so it is harder to go and ask for help around those behaviours, but it is a very serious addiction. Addiction is where you may know something is not good for you, and it has serious negative consequences and yet you keep doing it anyway and part of you justifies the substance or behaviour and there is a part of you that gets annoyed at yourself because you don’t have the will power to stop, because there is a part of you that does want to stop and you feel guilty when you can’t.

Addiction is also very troublesome for family, friends and loves ones. Sometimes the person who is concerned about the person in addiction can neglect themselves and focus solely on the person who is in active addiction and the concerned person can become very sick physically and emotionally.

If you are in recovery, it is good to get counselling to maintain staying clean and sober. If you have a behavioural addiction then coming to counselling and admitting there is a problem is a big step and you then have the opportunity to have help with your journey to recover and stay in recovery from the negative and maladaptive behaviours.

A concerned person who is worried about a loved one in addiction really needs to be able to give themselves some time to focus on their own mental well-being. Counselling is one way in which that really helps.

Codependency

It is extremely difficulty living with codependency. For many people, they don’t even know that they are codependent or what codependency actually is. Codependency is extremely complex but I will explain some of the symptoms here. The beauty of having codependency is it can be changed once you have identified that you are indeed a codependent. Then the exploration can be done together as to where the codependency personality traits and behaviours originated from and how they can be changed. Having psychotherapy will really help with this issue because once it has been identified and you learn about the negative consequences associated with codependency, and how it impacts your ability to function, you can then make significant changes for the better.

If you recognise some of these then maybe you would benefit from coming to talk with me. You maybe addicted to a person; this can be a romantic relationship, a friend or family member. Obsessive thinking about the person to the point you neglect yourself and other people in your life and your responsibilities. You may compromise your own values when it comes to an individual. You have no or very poor boundaries. You can’t say no without feeling guilty. You can end up in unhealthy toxic relationships. People pleasing, is a behaviour that happens often, where you please another person even it means you suffer or say yes even though you didn’t want to.  Sometimes, you may find yourself in situations that you really don’t want to be in but you might stay anyway to try and protect the other person, or because you can’t say no and your people pleasing, putting others needs before your own. You may change your personality depending on your surrounding so you can try and fit in because you really don’t have a sense of who you really are as a person. You may be exhausted all the time. Do you find yourself always on edge waiting for something bad to happen? Do you suffer with anxiety and depression because you are fearful of what might happen to the individual that you obsess about? A codependent person can be difficult to live with because often they don’t realise they are controlling and being manipulative but they do this from a place of love to try and protect their loved ones. This can especially happen if the person that a codependent is trying to control is a person in addiction but it is not always a person in addiction.

With codependency, it is about psychoeducation, learning about what it is, exploring its origins, identifying personality traits that are associated with it and relearning and practicing new behaviours and perceptions. This is a long process but is very rewarding when you are no longer a person that has codependency issues. It positively affects the codependent person and people around them.

A Living Loss

Suffering the effects of loss can also be related to a loss of a romantic relationship, a job, a marriage breakdown, a home, children growing up and leaving home, an estranged parental/child/sibling relationships and much more. All of those types of living losses can be devastating and difficult to cope with. I will be there to support you with your feelings and thoughts and provide an empathic environment for what you are going through.

I provide a safe space for you to talk openly about any concerns you have.

Counselling or Psychotherapy

Counselling is shorter term and helps with a particular situation that you may be going through. Whereas, psychotherapy is more long term and helps to identify where issues arrived from and how they have affected your everyday life now.

It is not about blaming anyone; it is identifying with compassion and then reframing beliefs and empowering positive changes within you.

All of this has so many positive life changing experiences. The rewards of a happier, contented and fulfilling life are achievable, no matter what you have gone through.
